Bonita Springs and Estero sit at the north end of our delivery zone, and they ride like two different places. Out west, Hickory Boulevard runs the length of a skinny barrier island lined with small public beach paths, with Lovers Key State Park at the far end. Inland, downtown Bonita along Old 41 is a compact cluster of Old Florida: a riverfront park, a garden open since 1936, and a breakfast cafe within a block or two. Estero adds Koreshan State Park and Coconut Point. Ride the beach side and the downtown side as separate outings; US 41 and the six-lane stretch of Bonita Beach Road sit between them.

What it's like to ride here

The beach side. Bonita Beach Road ends at the Gulf, and Hickory Boulevard turns north along the barrier island. Between the road and the water are numbered Lee County beach accesses, each a short sandy path with a few parking spaces that fill early. On a bike you roll right up, lock up, and walk onto a quiet stretch of sand. Keep going north and Hickory becomes Estero Boulevard, crossing the Big Hickory Pass and New Pass bridges to Lovers Key State Park.

The downtown side. Old 41 Road is where Bonita Springs started. Riverside Park sits on the Imperial River with the historic Liles Hotel and a row of artist cottages, and Everglades Wonder Gardens, open since 1936, is a block north. It's a small area, best treated as a slow loop with a long breakfast in the middle.

Estero. Koreshan State Park preserves the settlement of an 1890s utopian community on the Estero River, and Coconut Point is the area's big open-air shopping center. The Village of Estero has a long-range bike and pedestrian plan, but for now many of its main roads are built for cars, so use the quieter connectors and ride to a destination rather than along the main roads.

Lovers Key by bike

Lovers Key is one of the best rides in our zone, and a bike is the best way to arrive. The state park charges $2 per person on foot or bike, versus $8 for most cars, and beach access is through walking and bicycle entry points. The park also has about five miles of multi-use trails shared by hikers and cyclists.

From Bonita Beach Park it's close to 5 miles each way up Hickory and Estero Boulevards, so plan on a half day with beach time. You don't need to cross the Big Carlos Pass bridge to Fort Myers Beach to reach the park; that bridge is just beyond it.

Beach parks under repair

Lee County closed the parking lots and amenities at Bonita Beach Park and Little Hickory Island Park on September 8, 2026 for Hurricane Ian repairs, with no reopening date announced. The beaches themselves stay open to people arriving on foot, which makes this a good season to come by bike. Don't count on restrooms or showers at either park, and check the county beach pages before you go. The county also notes that storm debris can be buried in the sand, so wear beach shoes.
